Not just because it’s awesome in muffins and cookies, but oatmeal can also be used in an old-timey, no-nonsense breakfast treat.
If you know me and my eating habits/quirks, then you might be surprised by my love of oatmeal. Granted, I love MY oatmeal and am too afraid to order it out. (Although one day I [...]

it’s new to me: omelet

I’ve always hated eggs. Especially yolks; even in my baby book, my mother pointed out I wouldn’t eat yolks. Did I know they were little cholesterol bombs? And I’ve always hated mixing foods—or even having foods touch each other on my plate (I’m getting better about that)—so an omelet? Never had one. And I moved [...]

‘Twas an action-packed weekend, that’s for sure. We had friends in from out of town, but they weren’t arriving until almost 3:00 p.m. on Saturday…plenty of time to climb a mountain in the morning. So before driving out to Wahkeena Falls we fueled up at Paradox Cafe. (Remember, Paradox is 10% off with your NW Veg card!)
This is [...]

Every time I make this, I laugh. I laugh because I pick up my copy of Vegan with a Vengeance, open it to the recipe, and picture the mom on “Better Off Dead” trying to impress the foreign exchange student with her continental cuisine. And then I picture Ricky’s mom blowing up. Oh, ’80s cinema, [...]

Well, my parents are safe and sound back in Chicago after a weeklong visit. (I assume this because I read no news of a horrible plane crash—not that I got a “We just landed safely” call <ahem>.) Tom and I couldn’t take any time off work so they managed to keep themselves busy, given the city and [...]

It was a very stressful week at work, the election’s coming up, and my parents just got in from Chicago yesterday, so I’ve been stretched a bit thin (as tends to happen to—ugh—grown-ups). But yesterday morning, I took some time out to stop and smell the muffins.
I know I’ve written about Sweatpea—and even their marionberry muffin—before, but [...]

I’ve spent a bit of time lately obsessing over biscuits. I’ll spare you the details, but I think I found a good one, from La Dolce Vegan! It’s just a plain ol’ baking powder biscuit, but it’s got enough fluff to it to make it interesting.
I did the prep last night, cutting the Earth Balance into the dry [...]

This is Mecha Sad Bear (from Luke Chueh—check him out if you don’t know him), one of the presents Tom bought me even though I said I don’t deserve any presents because I’m a good-fer-nothin’, piece-o-crap, unemployed, 35-year-old hausfrau. He also got me a gigantic nutrition book. The plain truth is, though, I suck at [...]

Friday night was pretty sweet. We’d gotten a check for some freelance work on the same day as Tom’s first paycheck…and I found out that our Federal Consolation Compensation Check won’t be in the mail until June, meaning it’s not lost in the mail due to our change of address (yet). So margaritas were in [...]
breakfast at sweatpea

Seeing as it’s only a handful of blocks away, keeping our Sweatpea trips down to once a week is tough. They don’t overcharge you there just ’cause they can, and the guy behind the counter—usually a bearded gent—is friendly and happy without being annoying. This is essential when you’re just starting your day. I think [...]
